About Chihuahuas... in honor of our July COTM: CRSD

About Chihuahuas...

Folklore and archeological finds show that the Chihuahua breed did originate in Mexico. The most likely theory is that they are descended from the Techichi, a companion dog, favored by the Toltec civilization in Mexico. Artifacts of pots with images thought to be the Techichi were found in Mexico as far back as 300BC but could be earlier ancestors. Wheeled dog toys that resemble the apple head and deer head Chihuahuas were unearthed in Mexico to El Salvador, the earliest of these date back to 100AD. It is thought that the breed was in Mexico over 1400 years before the first Europeans arrived.

The Chihuahua is named after the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, apparently because colonial records claims that 16th century Conquistadores found them in the region later known as Chihuahua.

Chihuahuas are generally unsuited for homes with small children but the temperament of its owner can make a difference in the temperament of the pup. They tend to be fiercely loyal and can become over protective... with proper training this can be avoided. Chihuahuas tend to have a clannish nature preferring other Chihuahuas or mixed Chihuahuas to other dogs.

They love their dens and will often burrow themselves in pillows, blankets or deep under the bed covers. Chihuahuas were bred to be companion animals and love to be close to their owners and will quietly lie as close to you as possible. They are a very loving breed and will shower you with love and companionship in a household that understands and appreciates the specialness of this breed.

  1. Great info on these funny little dogs! Love all the pics of chihuahua themed listings. Thanks for including my chihuahua fairy pendant. :)

One more bit of chihuahua rescue trivia...did you know that one of the reasons people abandon their chi's and chi mixes in shelters and rescues is because they "got too big"! Seriously! People also shy away from adopting the "too big" chihuahuas and mixes...what makes this even more ridiculous? "Too big" is usually a whopping 8 to 12 lbs. Humans are SO bizarre.
