There are close to 200 domestic cats that reside at CedarHill Animal Sanctuary... and although March is rapidly coming to a close- its never too late to say a quick "miow miow" hello to the domestic felines that grace the premises with our Charity of the Month...

"The domestic cats of Cedarhill are, in general, divided between two houses, one for senior and disabled cats, and another for the junior residents. Inside, cats of every hue and pattern sleep on "people" beds and sofas that no one will ever shoo them from."

"Each cat is spayed or neutered. Their facilities are outfitted with climbing towers, pet beds and plenty of cat doors to the sun porch and large yard filled with toys. Visitors are showered with all the feline affection one could ask for."

"Like the big cats, their stories are often heartbreaking. Some have diabetes, some are blind or have neurological disorders. But each has a name and is cared for daily."

There is no doubt in my mind that CedarHill Animal Sanctuary is an exceptional place for rescued animals to live out their days in peace and with love & affection.

After a mere 28 years, I decided to move back to my small hometown. My vet’s office runs a rescue from which I adopted my two dogs. There I saw a collection box with a picture of a tiger on it - donations for Cedarhill Animal Sanctuary. I asked Pam, the Office Manager about Cedarhill Animal Sanctuary. I was amazed when she told me about them and what they do.

Already a member of Team EFA at the time, I wanted to start raising money to help Kay and the animals. So I began to paint some little pieces of art, selling them on Etsy and donating all the proceeds to Cedarhill.  I’ve been donating to them for about 8 years now.

Kay and I would email and I would get their monthly news letter. I knew that visitors were rare to Cedarhill because the animals had already had stressful lives and needed peace, quiet and great care. Then after several years, I got the email and I was invited to visit ! I loaded up on cat toys and went to visit the sanctuary.

CedarHill is amazing. It is nicer than some zoos that I have visited. Arthur, the pig, was already a favorite of mine and I knew of his antics via the newsletter and web postings. I was able to tour, play with the domestic cats, meet Arthur, and just overall bask in all the wonderfulness.

The enclosures are well-built, extremely sturdy and provide play and exercise areas. Kay realizes that the animals are still animals, wild in their nature. Another fabulous thing about Cedarhill is that nearby Mississippi State University has a School of Veterinary Medicine and the students get to learn about exotics first hand. 

Although Kay has had personal health issues she always manages to put the animals and their care first. In the “keeping it real department” -- early last Saturday morning I was driving by Cedarhill on the way to a show in Alabama and there was Kay out in the field where the pigs and horses live, shoveling poop.

CedarHill Animal Sanctuary, Inc. was founded in 1990 by owner/Executive Director/operator Kay McElroy. We are licensed by the Mississippi state game & wildlife department, accredited by (ACE) animal centers of excellence and the association of Sanctuaries (ASA). We received our (501)(c)(3) status in 1992.

The principal focus of the sanctuary is the welfare of the great cats and all animals. There are currently few laws, either federal or state to protect these animals from neglect and mistreatment. The sanctuary on behalf of its charges and all exotic cats, maintains that each animal, as a fellow inhabitant of this planet has certain basic rights which humans are obliged to respect; dignity of being, unpolluted living space, and a rightful place in the natural order.

The secondary goal of the sanctuary is simply to provide for the animal residents of Cedarhill a safe haven, which is the duty owed to them. The sanctuary chooses a narrow focus in its campaign for the ethical treatment of all animals. “As we honor the few, we honor the many”.

Kay has become a leader in the animal sanctuary community. In 1994 she wrote and distributed a book titled Nutritional Needs for the Exotic Feline in Captivity. She has also become a resource to exotic animal caretakers in other countries. Kay wrote the Exotic Animal Act of 1997 that was passed into law in the state of Mississippi. The law prohibits canned hunts, exotic animal auctions, established state registration requirements and caging standards.

Cedarhill Animal Sanctuary, Inc. is 100 % donor supported by the generous contributions of more than 1400 donors. Among its donor family are community and youth groups that have donated their time and skills to help with projects and construction throughout Cedarhill’s 20 acres. Cedarhill receives no government funding.

Over 300 animals claim Cedarhill Animal Sanctuary in Caledonia, MS as their forever home. Kay McElroy started the sanctuary when she rescued her first big cat at age 42. Now 65 , Kay has built a beautiful secluded sanctuary for little cats, big cats, pigs, horses, dogs, wolves and about every animal that you can imagine and some that you probably can't even think of.


Kay has been on dialysis herself for over 18 months and her personal struggles with pain only make her more empathic to the animals that she rescues. Cedarhill is a big lovely place with large open air enclosures. One of my favorite things about Cedarhill is that Kay and her staff provide toys (big toys) for even the tigers. She cares for the animals' overall well-being with items that stimulate their mind and bodies. There are lovely ponds, swing sets, room to roam, and other animal pals for them to live out their lives in safety and peace. Mississippi State University has a veterinary school only about 40 miles away and the soon to be vets get hands on training with the huge variety of animals. This is not a zoo - it is a sanctuary in the truest sense of the word. Local Boy Scouts have built wolf enclosures.


Arthur the pot-bellied pig is one of my favorites. He has no idea that he is a pig. He is quite the character. Please visit him and all the other animals on the Cedarhill website.. http://cedrhill.org
