October's COTM is... Alley Cat Allies by Veronica of ScrappyRat

It's time to announce our October Charity of the Month. I'm very excited about this one and I hope all of you will be too, because this month, we'll be helping out the internet's favorite subject... kitties!

October's Charity of the Month is...

Alley Cat Allies Mission Statement: To transform and develop communities to protect and improve the lives of cats. They are one of the most respected organizations making a difference for stray and feral cats today. ACA is the only national nonprofit organization dedicated exclusively to the protection and humane treatment of cats in the U.S.A.

In the early '90s, Alley Cat Allies earned their (tabby?) stripes introducing the concept of Trap-Neuter-Return (also known as TNR, for short) to the U.S.A as the only humane and effective option for feral cats.

Wondering what makes a cat feral?

Feral cats are not socialized to humans and therefore, they are not adoptable. Feral cats don’t belong indoors and are typically wary of us. Feral cats’ needs are not met by the current animal control and shelter system, where animals who are not adoptable are killed. They live full, healthy lives outdoors—but are killed in shelters. Even no-kill shelters can’t place feral cats in homes. Feral kittens, however, are typically quite adoptable and can be placed in indoor homes. (I have two!)

Alley Cat Allies has helped convince hundreds of municipal governments to adopt TNR, and inspired millions of individual citizens to practice TNR in their communities. They advocate for a wide variety of local and state communities to protect all cats across the country, including reforming the shelter system, which routinely kills seven out of every ten cats, including virtually 100% of the feral cats they encounter.

Alley Cat Allies provides the national voice for cats and the millions of us who value the lives of cats in the U.S.A To learn more about Alley Cat Allies and their devotion to this critical work, check out their links below !

There's another reason it's so great that we got Alley Cat Allies as our October COTM... The 16th of October is National Feral Cat Day! Read more about it here:  http://nationalferalcatday.org/
