Animals Petitions Corner: SHARK WEEK by Alicia of WoodsEdge

Presented by Alicia of WoodsEdge

Speak Up for Sharks this Shark Week!

We know by now the important role that sharks play in marine ecosystems as apex predators. Unfortunately, an estimated 73 million of these fascinating creatures are being slaughtered every year mainly to meet the demand for shark fin soup. This level of slaughter isn't just cruel, but unsustainable and has left some species facing the threat of extinction.

1. Pledge to be FINished with Fins

Pledge to pass on products with shark fins and to support ending the shark fin trade in your country.

2. Support a Shark Fin Ban in Your State

Please send a letter to your representative asking them to help shut this market down by banning the sale of shark fin products.

3. Support a Ban on Shark Fins in Canada

Sign the petition urging Canadian officials to ban the sale, trade, possession and distribution of shark fins.

4. Tell Reunion Island Not to Kill Sharks

Reunion Island has seen a strange cluster of shark attacks recently, and officials have responded with a plan to kill 90 bull and tiger sharks who live in the island's marine reserve. However, sharks experts are calling for scientists to study what has led to the attacks, whether it's something in the environment or changes in human activity, instead of pursuing what seem to be nothing more than revenge killings.

Please sign the petition asking French authorities to stop the slaughter.

  1. California, Hawaii, Washington, Oregon and Guam have already banned the sale, trade, and possession of shark fins. I hope this shark protection will spread to all the remaining states and other countries.
