weekly Animal Petitions Corner

Presented by Alicia of WoodsEdge

1. Keep Ohio's Escaped Animals Incident from Happening Again

While it may sadly be too late for the animals who escaped from Terry Thompson's zoo in Zanesville, OH, there are still other exotic animals in the state being kept largely unregulated. The lack of regulation has posed a threat not only to people and domestic animals, but to the animals who are themselves kept in captivity.

Sign the petition asking the governor to ban the sale and ownership of exotic animals in Ohio and keep wild animals in the wild.

2. It's European Shark Week

October 15-23 is Shark Week in Europe where citizens from all of the EU countries are asking EU fisheries ministers to protect sharks from over exploitation and strengthen the regulations that ban shark finning. While finning is technically banned, there are loopholes that allow it to happen and go undetected and unpunished.

Sign Shark Alliance's petition calling for a total ban on removing shark fins at sea, national protection for endangered shark and ray species and catch limits based on science.

3. Save Coral Reefs in Biscayne National Park

Biscayne National Park, located in southern Florida, is the largest marine park in the National Park System and is home to the third-largest coral reef system in the world and the longest stretch of mangrove forest remaining on Florida’s east coast. This area once supported a vibrant ecosystem, but has been littered and over-fished to the point of pushing some species close to extinction.

Send a letter to the park's superintendent asking him to protect species in this fragile ecosystem and establish new marine protected areas in the park through its new proposed management plan.
