Animal Petitions Corner
by Alicia of WoodsEdge
1. Support the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act
The Great Ape Protection Act has just been reintroduced with bipartisan support in both the House of Representatives and the Senate as the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act.
Passage of this legislation will phase out testing for about 1,000 chimpanzees currently in U.S. labs, along with retiring 500 federally owned chimpanzees to sanctuaries, which will save taxpayers approximately $30 million annually, while marking a milestone for animals by making this the first time a species has been exempted from invasive research in this country.
Sign the petition asking Congress to pass this Act and send a letter to your representatives asking them to support and cosponsor this legislation.
2. Feeling Crafty ? Make an Easter Card to Help Bunnies
We all heart handmade, but whether you make it yourself or grab one at the store, In Defense of Animals is asking people to send Easter cards to Nordstrom president Blake Nordstrom to ask him to stop selling fur products made of rabbits. Even if it’s late, he’ll still get the message. If you’re feeling extra generous, you can also send one to Nordstrom Customer Relations at the same address.
Send to:
Blake Nordstrom, President, Nordstrom Corporate Offices, 1700 Seventh Avenue, Suite 300, Seattle, WA 98101.
3. Tell Congress How You Feel About Delisting Wolves
If you’re outraged over the unprecedented act of wolves being removed from federal protection under the Endangered Species Act as part of a “budget compromise” let Congress know how you feel. The rider that was snuck in, now places wolves in the hands of states who don’t seem to have any interest in protecting them.
Send a letter to your representatives telling them that putting politics before science is unacceptable and that wolf provision needs to be removed from the spending bill.
