1. Ask for Public Hearings on “National Elephant Center”
The National Elephant Center received a permit to build a breeding/holding facility for elephants in St. Lucie County, FL where elephants would be moved in and out, tearing apart their important social groups. However, the permit included language that would prohibit the use of bullhooks. Instead of complying, they're looking for somewhere else to build. They've gotten permits from the city of Fellsmere and from the St. John’s Water Management District, but there were never any public hearings involved.
Send a letter to the city of Fellsmere asking them to reopen the permit process and allow for public hearings.
2. Tell the USFWS Not to Declare a War on Cats
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is planning on holding a neat little workshop of sorts that will essentially teach people how to thwart Trap-Neuter-Return programs. In addition to posing a serious threat to feral cats, this is an incredible waste of taxpayer dollars.
Sign the petition telling the USFWS to start promoting effective non-lethal methods of controlling feral cat colonies.

3. Protect Creatures in the Deep Sea
Technology has allowed scientists to discover new species and see ecosystems filled with life deep below the ocean's surface. Unfortunately, the fishing industry has also made use of equipment that enables deep sea trawling, which as the Pew Environmental Group puts it, can destroy in mere hours what has taken centuries to develop.
Send a letter to the U.N. Assembly asking for a firm stance on regional and national policies that are needed in order to protect both species and ecosystems.

ReplyDeleteI had read about the cat killing project earlier this week. So sick. Really - can't the gov't find more profitable things to engage in?
