International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day

Yummy for Dogs
written & illustrated by
Veronica of ScrappyRat

I wrote a cookbook for dogs with almost 100 pages of recipes inside, so you might be led to think that I’ve done all the recipe creation I can handle. Not even close.

Dogs (with rats trailing just behind) are the most enthusiastic eaters I know. Sometimes people think this means dogs’ tastes are completely indiscriminate. Sure, dogs will eat boring kibble, but give them the opportunity and they’ll surprise you with their eclectic palette.

So, in honor of the canine gastronome, here’s a recipe I formulated in honor of today’s holiday…

Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day Vanilla Crème Biscuits

3 cups whole wheat flour

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp baking soda

½ c (1 stick) vegan non-hydrogenated margarine

1 c vanilla soy (or coconut milk) yogurt

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 tbsp agave nectar, brown rice syrup, or honey

½ c soy or rice milk

About an hour before you start baking, remove vegan margarine from the refrigerator and allow it to sit at room temperature to soften.

In bowl of an electric mixer combine flour, baking powder, and baking soda. Add the stick of vegan margarine (I used Earth Balance) and turn mixer onto medium speed to stir till margarine is crumbly.

Add soy or coconut yogurt, vanilla, and nectar. Continue mixing until a pebbly dough forms. (This is a good point for your canine inspector to approve your work thus far.)

Add soy or rice milk and mix until a smooth dough forms. Scoop out heaping tablespoonfuls and place onto parchment covered cookie sheets. Press dough pieces into flat cookies. Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes.

These are very easy to make and they smell fantastic. They have a chewy texture that kept my dogs happily occupied for longer than most treats.

And about my cookbook, it’s called Yummy For Dogs and 100% of the profit I make selling it goes to animal rescue and advocacy groups, so it’s good for your animals, and for the animals, too.

Nearly 100 pages of dog treat recipes I've carefully formulated for maximum canine happiness! These are the very popular recipes Raleigh locals may remember from The Third Place coffeehouse.

Free of meat, eggs, and dairy, these treats avoid many allergens and I've included information in the foreward on adjusting the recipes further for dogs who may have sensitivites to other ingredients.

Canine nutrition is a subject I find facinating. I devour (no pun intended) every book I can find on the subject (including antiques!) and was lucky enough to be able to attend a day seminar on the subject when I was working as a kennel tech at a vet clinic. The dogs at the kennel became my test tasters, along with my own dogs--one who would eat a brick if you put it in her bowl, the other a true foodie who loves Ethiopian food above all else.

I have aimed to make these treats healthy as well as delicious, but keep in mind that these are treats, not the center of your dog's diet. Feed accordingly.

Recipes range from extremely simple to impressive ones that will knock your friends' socks off at your next doggie party.

Angel Policy: My recipes may be made for sale provided that all profits from their sale are donated to animal rescue or animal rights charities. The book includes info on setting up a biscuit-based fundraising program for rescues/shelters/animal advocacy groups. :)
