November's COTM: German Shepherd Rescue of New England - GSRNE

November Charity of the Month:
German Shepherd Rescue of New England
nominated by Alicia of Woodsedge

The German Shepherd Rescue of New England (GSRNE) is a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to, providing veterinary care and evaluations before finding forever homes for German Shepherds in need.

Zoe had hip dysplasia and elbow problems,

but she was so sweet that GSRNE paid

for surgery and rehab to help her.

GSRNE works through a network of volunteers who have opened their hearts and homes to take dogs of all ages who come from all walks of life, whether they were abused, found as strays, were owner surrenders or were left behind when their owners passed away. All the dogs who come into GSRNE are spayed/neutered, updated on vaccinations and receive whatever medical care their situation warrants before being placed in foster homes. Every dog is then carefully matched with a forever home that matches their temperament, activity level and needs.

Lex was starved, skeletal and near death

when he came into GSRNE.

After much care, he's now a shiny healthy,

happy boy who's loved by his new family.

As you can see from some of the dogs that are now happy members of their new families, they're great matchmakers. As a rescue, GSRNE relies on donations and fundraisers to help fund its foster care program and is supported by volunteers who use their time to network with shelters, plan events, transport dogs and check references, among many other tasks.

Riley was living in a garage

because her owners didn't want dog hair in the house.

She now lives happily as part of a family.

I found GSRNE when I was living in Boston, MA and looking for a rescue that I could volunteer with. Needless to say, after reading some of the stories on their website, my volunteer application was filled out and sent off. Check out the website and video below to meet some more of the dogs GSRNE is working to save.

Lux's family had to move,

but he's now happy and healthy in his new home!

COTM Update: BARC's Kitten Kaboodles

Charity of the Month Update:
BARC's Kitten Kaboodles
from underneath the cats at Yarn Miracle

Another BARC initiative that steals my heart is the Kitten Kaboodles program.

This all-volunteer group functions through a network of retail adoption sites, vets and individual homes who provide either adoption space (the retailers) or socialization (foster families) for non-feral cats that have been abandoned, neglected or abused.
Founded in 2000 in an effort to increase cat adoptions, the Kitten Kaboodles group has just rescued it's 560th cat, Wonder. Wonder and her littermates were just days old when they were abandoned near a dumpster. It is a 'wonder' that she survived: her right eye was ulcerated and had to be removed. The rest of her siblings were not so lucky.

Baldwin County is lucky to have such selfless and dedicated volunteers to look out for our abandoned animals. To make your donation to the Charity of the Month, click here.

To find out more about the Baldwin County Humane Society please visit their website at
BaldwinHumane.org ... you can read up on the Kitten Kaboodles program while you are there.
