CHARITY OF THE MONTH

Usually each month, TEAM EFA designates one animal charity as our Charity of the Month (aka COTM). 

During the month of August, Team EFA's Charity of the Month is ANYTHING GOES… which means that efa cotm members who participate in our COTM program will be able to select from any of our last 11 charities when making their donations. 



As is becoming tradition during the quieter summer month of August... patrons, sponsors & members have a renewed opportunity to look back on EFA's 2011/12 COTM charities and assist one or several of these fabulous organizations.

THE FERAL CAT RESCUE PROJECT

"Chriss Pagani has spent close to 10 years feeding and caring for the feral cats that come to her home in the rural farmland of Oregon which is owned by her sister.

As a cat lover with a childhood that mimics much the same as a feral cat's life, she feels a kind of kinship with these felines that are looking for a safe place to live out their existence in the wild. She accepts the fact that they are wild cats. She tries to find homes for the kittens who have been socialized, but she also tries to provide a kind of protected atmosphere around her home where those who will always be wild can abide without being caught and killed by humans who deem them a useless nuisance.

The Feral Cat Rescue Project's blog is an attempt to document the lives of these feral cats and their plight. She decided that poor kitties deserved to be seen by the world, to give their lives meaning to a broader audience, so she started photographing and documenting them, giving faces to their stories and putting their lives into words."

CHICAGO ENGLISH BULLDOG RESCUE

The care we provide our English Bully rescues exceeds any you will find from a breed rescue…heck, any rescue! This love includes a high quality diet, the best veterinary care around from a bulldog specialist, and behavioral evaluations of the highest quality.

"Don’t be fooled by our name, we cover a very large Midwest territory. We serve Chicago-proper and the surrounding suburbs, the state of Illinois, Northwest Indiana, and Southeast Wisconsin including Milwaukee. Made up of 100 volunteers, CEBR has rehomed almost 300 bullies and counseled hundreds of families to provide support, encouragement and training consults to help keep bullies in their homes."

NORTH STAR RESCUE

"North Star Rescue is a unique organization based in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, a rescue group that is solely dedicated to rescue and welfare of companion rodents.

Companion rodents, a term that doesn't often come up at the dinner table, is a broad label used to encompass the various species that North Star Rescue works to protect including rats, hamsters, mice, guinea pigs and chinchillas.

North Star Rescue operates like many rescues with no central location, instead relying on an all-volunteer team of unpaid helpers who give space in their homes and their hearts to help care for the Bay Area's abandoned pet rodents until they can be found loving, permanent homes."

Hello!

This is Ava in holiday mode...

Ava fills up a lot of space but mostly the space that was left in our hearts when we lost our 14 year old Shih Tzu last June. My husband Gary and I tried a go at life without the joy and satisfaction of being pet parents but the void was deep, and did not lessen with time.

I turned to the Internet for comfort one day, searching for dogs that were adoptable. The Chicago English Bulldog Rescue (CEBR) popped up online and presented a possible solution. I was immediately drawn in by the pictures of bullies needing forever homes. Picture after picture showed beautiful bulldogs who had been abused, neglected, mistreated and abandoned.

Suddenly tears gave way to excitement. For days I was haunted by CEBR until I decided to approach my husband about considering adoption once again. I brought him to the computer. We read and looked at the pictures together and with very few words we launched our journey together to become adoptive parents to one of CEBR’s bullies.

After submitting our application online, CEBR began their very careful analysis of our suitability to take one of their bulldogs using their extensive telephone evaluation and follow-up home visit to determine if we offered a safe environment. Only after thorough scrutiny were we considered eligible and qualified as CEBR adoptive pet parents. Part of their analysis was to determine which dog would be best suited to us and our home.

Ava was chosen as the perfect fit... And she is! It’s been over 3 months now since Ava joined our family and as they say… we rescued her and she saved us!

The national economic downturn in the past few years has presented some unexpected challenges for CEBR with an unprecedented rise in bulldog surrenders both by owner families and various animal care and control organizations that turn to CEBR for assistance in appropriate placements. Our dedicated group of volunteers has enabled us to not only respond to this increased need for our services but also to strategically expand both our service area and our exceptional Rescue Program which focuses on puppy mill, dog auction, and large scale surrender situations."

The Project ARK Rescue Bullies

"As part of our ongoing mission to help bulldogs in need CEBR will sometimes take on special missions as part of our Exceptional Rescue Program. These missions focus on puppy mill, commercial breeding, dog auction and large scale surrender situations where dogs are suffering, often in hopeless situations. We recently found out about two groups of bullies in Arkansas that truly needed our help and the weekend of March 5, 2011 we drove for almost three straight days to a desolate region of the South on a very special rescue mission dubbed Project ARK."

"Project ARK was a two-part mission. We first removed 8 bullies from a commercial breeding operation in a remote part of the Ozarks. We successful drove away with 3 breeding girls, 1 pregnant breeder mom, and 1 mom with three beautiful 3 week old puppies. These girls were living in outdoor kennels, on the cold earth, with little protection from the rain and elements.

The next day we completed the second part of our mission. We rescued another 4 bullies from a mill in Oklahoma. This mill is infamous for kicking or dropping its puppies and is the same mill that brought us Sally May, Tallulah, Sookie Sue and Dora. Finally, we were able to take in one last bully that originally came out of the Oklahoma mill, but had been housed by an animal hoarder for the past year.

So all in all, 12 beautiful females and 1 handsome male! A huge welcome to Jessie, Clara, Sugar Mama, Penny, Jade, Cora, Leo, Olivia, Juliette and Gigi along with the three yet to be named babies. This is the exciting and happy news. The unhappy part of this announcement is that all of these beautiful bullies came from conditions that any of us would find deplorable. Legal? Yes. Disgusting? Absolutely!"

In addition to all of the spays, vaccinations and routine medical care, because of years of neglect many of the dogs that we take in require extensive medical care. We have taken in many severe orthopedic cases that require multiple surgeries and rehabilitation.
