ANiMAL PETiTiONS CORNER by Alicia of WoodsEdge

Presented by Alicia of WoodsEdge

1. Tell Veterinarians to Help Stop Devocalization

Although its considered animal cruelty by many and has been banned in Europe and Massachusetts, some veterinarians still perform devocalization surgeries on dogs and cats when their owners come up with reasons for not wanting to hear their voices, or deal with behavioral issues with training ...despite the health risks and frustration it causes pets. Some incorrectly claim that it helps keeps pets at home, even though devocalized animals still wind up in shelters, and the AVMA still supports it as a last resort when dealing with barking or meowing.

Sign the petition asking the AVMA to take an official stand against devocalization.

2. Tell the NIH to Send Retired Chimps to a Sanctuary

The NIH recently announced that it would be retiring 110 chimps from the controversial New Iberia Research Center in Louisiana. Ten of these chimps will be going to Chimp Haven, a sanctuary, while the rest will merely be moved to the Texas Biomedical Research Institute in Texas. Chimp Haven currently has room for 20 of them, and is working on completing renovations that would allow for all of the chimps at its facility. While the chimps going to Texas will be ineligible for invasive research projects, they may still be used in experiments.

Send a letter to the NIH asking that all of the chimps be retired to a sanctuary where they can live out the rest of their days in a natural environment, not another lab.

3. Help Protect Hawaii's Sea Turtles

Green sea turtles in Hawaii are currently listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, but their population continues to decline as they face threats from poachers, overfishing and habitat loss.

Send a letter to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service asking them to continue their efforts to protect sea turtles.
