ANiMAL PETiTiONS CORNER by Alicia of WoodsEdge

Presented by Alicia of WoodsEdge

1. Stop Brutal Coyote Killing Contest

Animal advocates are speaking out against the upcoming "Coyote Drive 2013" scheduled for early this February in Modoc County, California and are asking the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and the California Fish and Game Commission (Commission) to put a stop to it. Not only is any sort of killing contest indefensible, but this one also threatens the state's lone gray wolf, OR-7, who is known to roam in the area.

Please sign Project Coyote's petition opposing California's sanctioning the coyote drive contest, and any other type of killing contest.

2. Stop Squirrel Killing Spree in New York

The fire department in Holley, NY is sponsoring its seventh annual "Squirrel Slam" on February 16, with prizes for the largest squirrels killed, who will likely be pregnant females. Not only will this be a cruel bloodbath, but this year's contest includes a youth category, which will encourage children to kill animals for fun.

Please sign In Defense of Animals' petition  asking local officials not to sponsor events that glorify cruelty to animals.

3. Help Gray Wolves Keep Endangered Species Act Protection

Soon the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will propose removing protections for gray wolves across the country, even in areas that are critical to their continued survival.

Please send a letter to your representative asking them to stop the USFWS from removing Endangered Species Act protections for gray wolves.

1. Support the Retirement of All Research Chimpanzees

This week, a group of experts advised the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to permanently retire more than 300 government-owned research chimps to a sanctuary, but also recommended leaving 50 behind to use in experiments.

Please send a letter to NIH Director Francis Collins asking that all government-owned research chimps be retired to a sanctuary where they can live out their days in peace.

2. Help Protect Animals in Massachusetts

The legislative session has started in Massachusetts and animal advocates are working to pass bills that will protect dogs and cats from irresponsible breeders, end extreme confinement for farm animals and crack down on illegal hunting to protect wildlife.

Please send a letter to state representatives asking them to support these important bills for animals.

3. Support Expanding California's Sanctuaries for Wildlife

The Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary and Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary off the California coastline are home to a number of species from whales to coral and sit near an area that provides nutrient rich food they need to survive.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced it would consider a proposal to double the size of these two sanctuaries, which will protect the them from drilling and other destructive activities.

Please sign the petition supporting the expansion of these two sanctuaries.

1. Oppose Wolf Delisting in Wyoming

A plan to remove wolves from the protection of the Endangered Species Act in Wyoming has been formally announced and will leave them vulnerable to a shoot-on-sight management plan in most of the state, including national forests. This move, combined with the wolf management policies in neighboring states, fails to ensure wolves the vital protection they need to maintain healthy populations.

Please sign the petition opposing the delisting of wolves in Wyoming.

2. Get Justice for Victim of Breed Specific Legislation (BSL)

A pit bull/husky mix named Hank was taken from his home after a neighbor provoked him and turned in a videotape he had taken of Hank to Animal Control because he was left outside in a fenced in yard without a muzzle, a common requirement of discriminatory BSL. Sadly, Hank has since been euthanized, but to make matters worse, the local humane society would not even return Hank's body to his owner so that he could be buried and put to rest.

Please sign the petition asking St. Joseph's County to repeal its Breed Specific Legislation and for the vet who killed Hank to resign.

3. Protect Whales from Navy's Sonar Testing

The National Marine Fisheries Service has approved a plan for expanded sonar testing off the West Coast, despite the known detrimental effects on marine life and opposition from EarthJustice, Natural Resources Defense Council and Native American tribes, among others.

Please sign the petition asking the National Marine Fisheries Service to revoke the Navy's permit and protect marine life under the Endangered Species Act.

1. Help End the War on Wildlife

The Sacramento Bee recently published an expose highlighting the problems with Wildlife Services, possibly the biggest threat to wildlife, which kills more than 5 million animals every year while tax payers unwittingly foot the bill.

Please send a letter to your rep asking them to defund Wildlife Services lethal control methods.

2. Help Animals at Lagoon Amusement Park

Lagoon Amusement Park, located in Farmington, Utah, has a variety of animals and an abysmal track record of caring for them, including a long history violations of the Animal Welfare Act. Animal advocates  in the area are protesting in order convince Lagoon to relinquish the animals to rescues and sanctuaries that can meet their needs.

Please sign the petition telling Lagoon Amusement Park to do what's best for the animals and let them go.

3. End Cruel Pig Lab at the University of Texas

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHSCH) currently uses live pigs to train anesthesiologists through its Biannual Hands On Ultrasound Guided Regional Anesthesia Workshop. These pigs are repeatedly subjected to having needles and catheters placed in their veins, despite the fact that alternative methods to teach and practice these procedures are readily available.

Please send a letter to UTHSCH asking them to stop using live animals to train students.

1. Get Justice for Cisco - Innocent Dog Shot by Police Officer

On April 14, a Blue Heeler named Cisco was shot by an Austin police officer who was responding to a domestic violence call, only he showed up at the wrong house...held the owner at gun point and shot Cisco, who began barking when he saw the officer.

2. Ask Germany to Close Dolphinariums

Germany, one of 15 countries in the EU to have dolphinariums, currently has three in operation where dolphins and small whales are kept at for-profit businesses. They're taken from the wild, confined to enclosures that could never meet their needs, forced to perform tricks and suffer the effects of stress and illness.

Sign the petition asking Germany to become a leader in animal welfare by joining the few countries who have already banned dolphinariums.

3. Tell the USDA Animal Abuse is Unacceptable

The USDA has once again failed to protect animals by giving the Cole Bros. Circus a mere $15,000 fine, which in reality should have been about $100,000, for more than 10 violations of the Animal Welfare Act.

Send a letter to the USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack asking him to uphold the Animal Welfare Act and ensure that violators are held accountable, not slapped on the wrist.

2. Tell Congress to Fund Efforts to Save Bats

3. Help Pets in California Shelters

California's Governor Jerry Brown is working on an initiative that would reduce the amount of time they could spend there from four to six days to just 72 hours and would also remove holding limits for smaller animals, such as guinea pigs.

Sign the petition telling the governor that this change would have a detrimental effect on shelter pets by not giving them enough time to be adopted or found and returned home.

4. Help Greyhounds Get Adopted, Not Killed

With no laws to protect them, almost 400 greyhounds are killed every year at at a dog track called the Canidrome in Macau. Sources report that an estimated 800 greyhounds spend their lives in stacked cages and when they race, it's only for a small crowd and the ones who finish outside the top three more than five times in a row are automatically killed.

Sign the petition asking Macau's Chief Executive Dr. Chui Sai On to stop this senseless killing and implement an adoption at Canidrome.

1. Speak Out Against Idaho's Wolf Torture

After losing protection under the Endangered Species Act, the war on wolves in the Rocky Mountains has intensified. Photos have recently surfaced of a wolf that is believed to have been tortured in a trap before being killed with the involvement of the U.S. Forest Service. The Center for Biological diversity is calling for an investigation of Josh Bransford, who posted photos of a wolf who had been trapped near a road and non-fatally shot "by several guys", which violates the state's animal cruelty laws.

Sign the petition asking Idaho's Department of Fish and Game and the head of the U.S. Forest Service to investigate the matter and take the appropriate disciplinary action.

2. Help NYC Carriage Horses

The coalition to Ban Horse Drawn carriages has reported a number of incidents that took place in the past year resulting in car accidents, injuries to horses and people and dead horses in New York City, where horses have no business on the overcrowded streets.

Sign the petition asking that extra measures are taken to protect wildlife and biodiversity the boreal forest.

1. Save Florida's Sea Turtle Hatchlings

The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating a lighthouse in Pompano, Fla., that is causing nesting mother and baby sea turtles to lose their way and wander away from the water instead of towards it.

Please sign the petition asking the COast Gaurd to make simple changes that will preserve the lighthouse and help save turtles.

2. Tell Amazon to Stop Selling Caviar from Imperiled Sturgeon Species

A number of vendors currently sell caviar through Amazon.com, which some believe is having an adverse effect on endangered wild sturgeon populations, and attempting to replace wild sturgeon with a captive population. Farms also make it possible to kill wild fish and claim they were farm raised, in addition to providing an incentive to catch mature fish for breeding.

Please sign the petition asking Amazon.com's CEO to stop selling caviar and other products from these fish.

3. Save Baby Elephants from the Black Market

The illegal trade in elephants for ivory and for tourism is thriving in Thailand and Burma. Elephants are stolen from sanctuaries, with baby elephants being the most vulnerable to the practice and don't need to be registered until they are eight years old, making them hard to track.

Please sign the petition asking the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation asking that they register baby elephants at birth.

1. Speak Up for the Bonneville Sea Lions

On March 15, Idaho, Oregon and Washington were authorized to kill up to 92 sea lions from the Bonneville Dam simply because they eat salmon. Plans were approved even though there has been an increase of salmon in the area and sea lions account for only a 1-4% loss.

Sign the petition asking the organizations in charge to reverse their plans and use resources to find an alternative that will benefit all wildlife involved.

2. Tell the EPA to Stop Lead Poisoning

According to the Center for Biological Diversity more than 3,000 tons of lead are shot into the wild every year, along with an estimated half a million lead sinkers that are lose by fisherman, posing a poisonous threat to wildlife and humans.

Sign the petition telling the EPA to stop the use of toxic lead for hunting and fishing.

3. Support the Pet Safety and Protection Act

In February, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced plans to phase out Class B dealers (random source animal brokers) for federally funded research, but pets who could wind up in labs still need help. The Pet Safety and Protection Act would put these dealers out of business, ensuring pets who end up in shelters get the second chance they deserve.

Sign the petition telling Congress to support this legislation to help keep pets safe.
