Not many people have the luxury of living right in the middle of the African bush, but I have!

I have been lucky enough to spend the last 7 years living and working at game lodges in Africa together with my husband. We live in a pretty remote area in South Africa with the closest real civilization 40 minutes away by car. We get to experience life surrounded by creatures big and small every day, elephants in our garden at night, leopard cubs playing tag on the dirt roads and hyena nibbling at our front door! The only little “domestic” treasures that share our lives here are our four finches and Hunter, a golden cocker spaniel by birth but a small human by belief.


I also love all things beautiful and riveted with stories and I like to create unique jewelry as I am not too fond of wearing something that hundreds of others have. My “studio” is our patio where I can watch the bushbuck grazing and I am inspired by things that make the child in all of us come out to play. That could mean an African bangle one day, a dainty flower necklace the next. My jewelry pieces are reminiscent of the charmed life I have here in the bush and the dust around me. These are my charmed treasures, all things whimsical and fun, made of dust and dreams!

EFA Member, Taryn Zychal of Recycling Zychal has spent the past 5 years of her life salvaging broken umbrellas from the trash and turning them into functional, stylish made-to-order dog raincoats. As she gets ready to launch the next phase of her highly anticipated broken umbrella line this November that will include new products for pets, home and baby, she’s also answering to the calls of animals in need. Recycling Zychal has developed FLORA FAUNA FUNCTION, a program designed to put broken umbrellas in her hands, keeping them out of the trash all while helping to raise money for non-profit animal helping organizations.

FLORA FAUNA FUNCTION works by having high traffic area businesses volunteer to put Broken Umbrella Recycling Bins, provided by Recycling Zychal, in their store. Patrons and new customers can then use the bin to donate and recycle their broken umbrella. When the bin is filled, Taryn will come and collect the umbrellas and Recycling Zychal will then donate $1 for each one donated to a group of rotating organizations, the first one being the Morris Animal Refuge in center city Philadelphia.

Shelter Dog Month

The Lonesome Road Studio reminded me in her blog that October is 'Adopt a shelter dog month'

It is also 1 year ago this month that my little pound dog Mia came to live with me.

Its been quite a steep learning curve with Mia learning how to deal with a dog with 'issues' But she is smart and loving and once I realised that she is like Scrappy Doo - all shouting because she is v scared of strange dogs. She is actually a gentle soul and has never attacked another dog (except settling in scuffles with Ben)

Ben is also a rescue dog from the Dogs Trust

I urge anyone considering a new dog to think about a rescue. It is so difficult to find a decent breeder these days with so many people churning out thousands of puppies just for money with no thought for the poor breeding dogs, the temperament or health of the puppies or the poor new owners who they fleece for thousands of £'s to buy their poorly bred 'designer crossbreeds' (read mutts) or 'pedigrees with papers' (papers can be anything - and a pedigree is no proof of good breeding)

Rescues can have puppies, they can have older mature dogs whos temperament has been assessed and you can KNOW if the dog will fit into your lifestyle. Rescues can compete successfully in the highest levels of dog sports or can be great family companions.

Before you buy that cute puppy (and encourage the breeder to churn out the next litter of puppies into an overcrowded world) take a while to look around a rescue.

and if you cannot take on another dog at the moment how about a little donation to one of the great charities that help look after and rehome these poor guys who need a chance to find a loving home??

Help the Pasadena Humane Society and SPCA

Since the Station Fire first broke out, the Pasadena Humane Society has been on the front lines helping those affected by the fire. As of Tuesday, we had already taken in more than 360 frightened and confused animals from evacuated areas.

Responding to a disaster of this scale is an expensive and exhausting endeavor. The Pasadena Humane Society is dedicated to providing the highest level of care for the evacuated animals. Our commitment to feed, shelter and care for the animals affected by this fire is unlimited, but unfortunately—our financial resources are not.

You can help by making a financial contribution today. Please, be as generous as you can. If we raise more money than we need for this emergency, we will use those funds to care for the other animals at the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA. Thank you so much for caring for the animals!

The Wildlife Learning Foundation has partnered with the Los Angeles Unified School District for ten years, providing fun and educational life science lessons in their Ready, Set, Go! (before school) and Youth Development Program (YDP, after school) programs. We teach lessons crafted to meet the California State Science Standards utilizing our collection of rescued and zoo-born wildlife as silent instructors and living visual aids. Due to recent budget cuts, there is no longer funding for our outreach. However, we believe that our lessons are valuable to the students, inspiring interest in science and giving positive experiences with animals and nature.

On September 26th, we are hosting a benefit to raise money to continue our outreach programs at no cost to the schools. We will have animal encounters, tours, food, drinks, silent auction and raffle tables. Any and all are welcome to attend! Welcome friends. My name is Kit and I will be your guide to understanding the universe, your place in it and how to take care of the Humans we protect. But first, a bit about me.

I began this lifetime in hardship. Soon after my litter mates and I were born, we were cruelly separated from our parents. Left to wander, and in the midst of a tremendous storm, I stumbled upon my current familiar human and her mate.

Shaking with cold and soaked through to the bone, I didn't think I would make it. Taking refuge in a pile of wood, all I could think of was how alone I was and so I cried out to the universe for help. My smallest whimper was heard, and She who is my new mother appeared. She saw my green eyes peering fearfully from between the logs and immediately found me a blanket, some warm milk, and a place to sleep. The next day, as I was pondering the possibilities of my new life, a cry came to me from a distance. I answered, which drew the notice of She and He.

He ran to the road from the house while She joined me in calling out. (She speaks feline really well!) Yes - down the road came my brother... who ran to me joyously. We snuggled together under a tree and I told him about my journey. We decided to stay with these humans, as they appeared to have been sent by the universal catsciousness to aid us during this lifetime.

After much mediation (and a bit of wild catnip) we decided that sharing our wisdom with our friends was our katmic task and so, with the help of my brother Kat, and other furfriends, we shall endeavor to help strengthen the relationship between the animal and human worlds.

To that end, we encourage your questions, comments and stories. In addition, to better assist in peaceful understanding, we will occasionally provide descriptions of characteristics that your human can use to help understand our world better. These descriptions are based upon information received from the universe and are based on planetary changes that may have occurred at the time of your birth.

We hope that this information can help you to better understand your human companions and we look forward to learning more about our new ETSY friends.

FieldHaven Feline Rescue

FieldHaven Feline Rescue is a wonderful haven for cats and cat lovers. I've known the director, Joy Smith since FieldHaven's beginning. In fact, I designed their logo. The staff and volunteers are such caring people and they do everything in their power to rescue and find forever homes for our feline friends. I always have a number of cat art items listed in my Etsy shop to benefit FieldHaven (just search for "fhfr"). Being able to use my critter art to help animals is a great feeling. I love animals and I love creating art, so putting the two together to raise money just makes sense! Peace to All Creatures: 'Zine Review

"Peace to All Creatures" is a new 'zine edited and designed by Pippi Howard of Uber Duper Creations and Jessi Van Pelt of Ginger Card Company. I have worked with Jessi and Pippi on some on-line projects to raise money for animals in need, and I knew that they were both committed to helping animals, but I really did not know what to expect when a friend asked me to review it. My first answer was "I'm not a vegan!" Pippi assured me that the 'zine was for everyone, and she was right.

There are three sections within the 'zine: Animals, Veg Diet & Heath, and Social & Green Issues, and each has several stories. Pippi and Jessi have both contributed articles, as have six other authors, and there is something in here to interest just about everybody. Some of the pieces are funny, some are educational, and some are both entertaining and informative. You may not agree with every article, but one of the things I liked most about the 'zine is that the opinions expressed are clearly individual, and there's no attempt to preach.

A few of my other favorite things about the 'zine were:

- The gorgeous cover art on the front (a painting by Hannah Braden) and back (a sculpture by Green Art Studios).

- Jessi Van Pelt's writing style. She actually made an article about reducing waste fun to read!

- Pippi Howard and Carla Guinta's anecdotes and advice about being vegan in an omnivorous world.

- Erica Freeman's charming article about caring for pet snails.

- Nicole Simone's helpful essay on how you can help animal rescue organizations from home.

- The fact that 10% of the profits from the magazine go to animal charity.

The magazine is printed on recycled paper and bound with a hemp cord, and is also available as a download. I highly recommend it.

EFA Charity of the Month for June

This month my chosen charity The Rabbit and Guinea Pig Welfare http://www.rngp.org/index.shtml in Rugby, Enlgand, was picked. Tracy Wadsworth runs the rescue and this is where I adopted Wesley from in November 2007.

Tracy took over this rescue when the original founder moved away. It concentrates on rescuing and rehoming rabbits and guinea pigs. Tracy said that at present she has lots of rabbits and guinea pigs still waiting for their forever homes. Currently there are no females left, only mature males and she would greatly love to find homes for them so that they may have a loving and happy life for the rest of their remaining years. The benefit of getting an older rabbit is that you give a forever home to a furry who would normally be overlooked and they have reached their full size. Rabbits live up to 14 years in properly cared for environments.



Tracy would like to encourage anyone with a single rabbit to consider adopting a bonded pair from her.  Tracy will assess your rabbit for suitability with the ones in her rescue and bonding can also be done. This would be an ideal time to add two boys to your household and would free up two valuable places in the rescue to take in more needy rabbits. All single rabbits are adopted out a dedicated house-rabbits only. Any rabbits that are kept outdoors in legally sized quarters are adopted out as bonded pairs or bonded trios, but it is psychologically more preferable to house your rabbit indoors as they benefit tremendously from companionship and contact.



All rabbits love to play with toys that can be picked up and thrown around. Here is Andrew taking his toy with him!! Tracy has a very informative page all about rabbits http://www.rngp.org/index-rabbit-facts.shtml that is a must read for any prospective rabbit owner and current owner.

Rabbits are not suitable for children and parents are often turned away from rescues because they want to get their child a 'pet' and see rabbits as 'the easy option'. Nothing could be further from the truth as they are very demanding, sometimes destructive beings and need to be accommodated suitably with enough daily attention and stimulation.



Baby rabbits reach full size within six months to a year and some rabbits can reach the size of small dogs. Unfortunately baby rabbits are usually always impulse purchases from pet shops. By this time many people have already abandoned them due to the lack of interest once the novelty wears off and the animal increases in size and decreases in cuteness. Hard work, expensive vet bills and general lack of interest mean rescues are bursting at the seams with ‘impulse purchase rabbits’ so the chances of adopting a baby are very slim.

When you are assessed for suitability to adopt a rabbit that has already had a traumatic start to life, sometimes with great psychological problems, then you have taken the first step to giving a very special being a second chance and also helping another rabbit get a place at the rescue centre.

It is best not go to the rescue with preconceived notions about what breed, colour, age and even sex of rabbit you want - in many cases you will meet the right rabbit – or rabbits - just waiting there for you!



All rabbits are great house bunnies and the rabbits at RNGP are neutered and spayed. For does this is life saving necessity as over 80% of unspayed does will die of uterine cancer. Rabbits are very inquisitive and mark their territories. They have a scent gland under their chin and rub it on everything they can reach. In most cases you will know that your rabbit loves - and owns you - because he will 'chin' you when you are at his level on the floor!

Running a rescue is hard and never ending work. There is always a demand for supplies that are used regularly such as hay, pellets, fresh vegetables and kitty litter supplies as well as donations of items and monetary donations (irrespective of size - any amount is GREATLY accepted). Tracy gladly welcomes  donations of any amount by paypal.

When rabbits and guinea pigs are adopted out there is an adoption fee to pay which covers their neutering or spaying costs and vaccinations and shows your committment to giving this small being a permanent place in your life. If you can afford it any amount extra is very welcome.



Tracy has many guinea pigs waiting for their forever homes and like the rabbits, they are also all males just now.

Guinea pigs and rabbits should never be kept together. They have different dietary habits and rabbits usually become dominant and aggressive resulting in the piggie being bullied and injured. But more importantly is the fact that rabbits carry Bordetella bronchiseptica commonly found in their respiratory tract (but which rarely causes them respiratory infections).  It happens to be the most common bacterial respiratory infection in guinea pigs and because of this rabbits which are not infected themselves are able to infect guinea pigs with always fatal consequences. The rabbit and guinea pig welfare was established in 1995 by Julie Fox, she started by just taking in a few strays, 
and ended up rehoming over five hundred animals a year.

Jasmine, the Mother Theresa Greyhound

In 2003, police in Warwickshire, England, opened a garden shed and found a whimpering, cowering dog. It had been locked in the shed and abandoned. It was dirty and malnourished, and had clearly been abused.



In an act of kindness, the police took the dog, which was a Greyhound female, to the nearby Nuneaton Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary, run by a man named Geoff Grewcock and known as a willing haven for Animals abandoned, orphaned or otherwise in need.

Geoff and the other sanctuary staff went to work with two aims to restore the dog to full health, and to win her trust. It took several weeks, but eventually both goals were achieved.

They named her Jasmine, and they started to think about finding her an adoptive home.

But Jasmine had other ideas. No-one remembers now how it began, but she started welcoming all Animal arrivals at the sanctuary. It wouldn’t matter if it was a puppy, a fox cub, a rabbit or, any other lost or hurting Animal, Jasmine would peer into the box or cage and, where possible, deliver a welcoming lick.

Geoff relates one of the early incidents. “We had two puppies that had been abandoned by a nearby railway line. One was a Lakeland Terrier cross and another was a Jack Russell Doberman cross. They were tiny when they arrived at the centre and Jasmine approached them and grabbed one by the scruff of the neck in her mouth and put him on the settee. Then she fetched the other one and sat down with them, cuddling them.”

“But she is like that with all of our animals, even the rabbits. She takes all the stress out of them and it helps them to not only feel close to her but to settle into their new surroundings.

“She has done the same with the fox and badger cubs, she licks the rabbits and guinea pigs and even lets the birds perch on the bridge of her nose.”

Jasmine, the timid, abused, deserted waif, became the animal sanctuary’s resident surrogate mother, a role for which she might have been born. The list of orphaned and abandoned youngsters she has cared for comprises five fox cubs, four badger cubs, 15 chicks, eight guinea pigs, two stray puppies and 15 rabbits.



And one roe deer fawn. Tiny Bramble, 11 weeks old, was found semi-conscious in a field. Upon arrival at the sanctuary, Jasmine cuddled up to her to keep her warm, and then went into the full foster mum role. Jasmine the greyhound showers Bramble the Roe deer with affection and makes sure nothing is matted.



“They are inseparable,” says Geoff “Bramble walks between her legs and they keep kissing each other. They walk together round the sanctuary.

Jasmine will continue to care for Bramble until she is old enough to be returned to woodland life. When that happens, Jasmine will not be lonely. She will be too busy showering love and affection on the next Orphan or victim of abuse.
