ANiMAL PETiTiONS CORNER by Alicia of WoodsEdge

1. Feds to Retire 110 Research Chimps, but More Need Our Help

Last week, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced that it will permanently retire 110 federally owned chimpanzees from the controversial New Iberia Research Center in Lafayette, La., bringing the U.S. a step closer to ending invasive research on primates. However, hundreds of primates that are owned by the government and private corporations are still eligible for invasive research.

Please send a letter to your representative asking them to support the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act, which will phase out federally funded research on chimpanzees and retire the remaining chimpanzees to sanctuaries.

2. Speak Up for Wyoming's Wolves

It will be open season for wolves in Wyoming as of midnight on September 30 leaving an estimated 60 percent of wolves in the state vulnerable to eradication. Aside from the unnecessary slaughter of an inherently valuable creature that plays a vital role in a healthy ecosystem, the state's wolf management plan will undo decades of work that went into restoring their presence.

Send a letter to Wyoming's Governor asking him to stop the killing of wolves outside of Yellowstone National Park.

3. Help Keep Pets Out of Research Labs

Last year the Pet Safety and Protection Act was reintroduced with the goal of banning Class B dealers, or random source animal dealers that obtain animals from breeders and shelters, in addition to resorting  pet theft, in order to sell them to labs and research institutions for a profit. The USDA recently filed a complaint against one of these dealers after numerous violations of the Animal Welfare Act, while an additional four of the seven licensed dealers are under investigation.

Please send a letter to your representative asking them to support this legislation to get rid of Class B dealers for good.
